3 Myths about Prenatal Yoga

Let's break down these 3 myths in Prenatal Yoga that I hear often!

1. You need to have been pregnant yourself to teach prenatal yoga:  Not true!  You can 100% be a certified prenatal yoga teacher without ever having been pregnant yourself.  We've had over 600 students go through our Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga certification program and many of them have never been pregnant- they are yoga teachers who want to feel comfortable when pregnant students join their classes. Personally, I've taught prenatal yoga (and even created a Prenatal Yoga School) for the last 7 years before being pregnant myself.   As long as you complete a certification program and feel comfortable to teach, then you can definitely offer prenatal and postnatal classes, even if you've never been pregnant.

2. You need to complete the 85-hour RPYT course to teach prenatal: Not true! You can choose to either complete a course that is registered with Continuing Education hours or the full 85-hour course which will allow you the standing "Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher" via Yoga Alliance.  Our school offers both options, as some students want the Continuing Education hours and others want the RPYT logo on their Yoga Alliance profile.

3. All prenatal yoga is very slow and gentle: Not true! Of course some classes can and will be gentle, but especially in Trimester 2, classes can be more dynamic and resemble a typical vinyasa or hatha class, with modifications of course!  Often (not always) women feel their best in trimester 2 and are craving a more dynamic practice that maybe wasn't possible for them in trimester 1.

What other potential myths have you heard about Prenatal yoga that you want to know if they're true or not?
