How to modify twists for pregnant yoga students
Are you struggling with how to modify certain poses for pregnant students in your yoga class? Twists are one area we definitely need to modify once we are aware that a student is pregnant!
If you’re a yoga teacher you probably have already encountered this situation! 😁 You’ve planned your favorite flowy and twisty vinyasa class and then a pregnant woman joins! 🤯
You don’t need to panic!
As long as women have a medical approval, practicing yoga in pregnancy can be really beneficial!
Here’s how you can modify twists in your class:
Instead of closed twists, invite your pregnant student to do the open twist variation (see image below).
‼️ Remember, always leave space for the belly! Closed twists don’t allow space for the belly, while open twists do! ‼️
If you’re at home practicing your sequence before you teach it, try doing the poses with a pillow or balloon under your shirt to check if they allow enough space for the belly.
